More than two servos on the CMUCAM 4
Added by Christophe Herault 11 months ago
Dear all,
I would like to know if, only on the CMU CAM4, there is a possibility to connect more than two servos just on the card.
I suppose too that if i am using a ucontroler as Arduino, i will be able to manage three servos or more, just connecting the CMUCAM4 to the Arduino's pins.
Thank you for your answer, and i apologise my poor english (I am French)...well nobody's perfect :-))
Cheers and i would like to say to you that uou did a fantastic work !!!

Wait till the 30 FPS version comes out. It will blow you away!
Don't worry about you language. I'm here to help.
Unfortunately you can't connect more than 2 servos to the CMUcam4. The servos it has connections for are designed for panning and tilting. You can control the 2 servos directly, however, and make them do other things than panning and tilting.
If you need a general purpose servo controller you can just buy one and add it to your system. It won't cost you more than $30 bucks.
The Arduino can control servos also. So, you shouldn't have to much of an issue.
Thanks,

Thank you Kwabena,
So, you told me that i will be blow away with the new version ? :-)
Do you have a roadmap to commercialize the 30FPS version ? I could be one of your first non-commercial buyer.
Ok, so according to your answer, i just need a third servo.
The first one is for tilting the camera, and the others will serve to drive the mobile platform.
Meanwhile i expect your last CMUCAM version, i will drive the three servos through the Arduino, and let's roll...
One more time, thank you for your help and support.
Christophe

Remember that you can use the SS command to set the servos to do whatever you want (as long as you don't set them to automatic panning or tilting mode).
Note: There's a 20 ms delay (worst case) for updating a servo manually. This is because the CMUcam4 only returns to idle mode after it has sent the new position update to the servo.
Thanks,

Hello Kwabena,
Right know, i took the decision to drive the servos directly by the Arduino, because it is the best solution for me.
Ok for the 20ms, this is a really usefull information, thanks.
I am writing a fuzzy logic layer for your cam (And a small GUI in GTK under Linux) for a specific application...let see if i'm right...
But as your Californian Gouvernor said: "I'll be back !" :-)) to show you my job in 5 weeks...or less...
Have a nice day and thank you for all.

Thanks,
If you feel like sharing you work and put it together nicely I'll add it to the website permanently.
Thanks,
