Yellow usually isn't the best color to track (depending on the background) because many light colors like white end up looking a little yellow or green on the camera. Try something like bright red, green or blue instead. As for distance, it really depends. The object needs to appear as a few pixels to distinguish it from noise. One the CMUcam1, we were able to track a 14"x15" blue recycling bin from 35 feet away. We could also track a 2"x2" target from 10 feet away. The CMUcam3 has twice the resolution in hi-res mode than the CMUcam1 (even more if you count the fact that it uses twice as many green pixels), so you should expect it to do better.
